After a massive 12-pound tumor was removed, the abandoned dog underwent a miraculous change.

Gilbert Grape was discovered abandoned in Arizona and was given the name Gilbert Grape because of the way he had grown. Due to the size and weight of the tumor, the Weimaraner could hardly walk when he was saved.

Gilbert got life-saving surgery after charity work by the Tickled Pink Weimaraner Rescue center raised £4,300. Gilbert is beaming with his new owner Scott Roberts a year after the 12lb benign tumor was removed.

Gilbert was located in the isolation wing of a high-kill shelter, according to Keri Pink from the rescue center. He could hardly stand because the tumor was so heavy.

“We’re still all baffled as to how he managed to live for so long.”

He was a true warrior, though, and he made a speedy recovery from the operation.

It took him some time to regain his strength because he lost a lot of muscle trying to make up for the growth’s mass. Blood transfusions and an IV catheter were used during the life-altering surgery to keep him alive.

Before being adopted, Gilbert had months of physical therapy to help regain the lost muscular mass. In the end, Scott adopted the courageous grey dog and gave him home so he could move on with his life.
