Obie the piggie weighed a whopping 5th 7lbs just over two years ago, and to protect his protruding tummy, he had to wear a special harness.
He was nonetheless put on a rigorous diet and fitness routine after being adopted by former veterinary technician Nora Vanatta in August 2012.

The trim seven-year-old now weighs a healthy 1st 9lbs after two years of diligent work and surgery to remove extra skin.
To inspire other podgy pets to lose weight, the daschund’s new owner has now published an encouraging calendar for 2015.
“I feel fortunate to be involved in Obie’s rehab and hope he may be an encouragement to any person or animal attempting to reduce weight,” said Nora from Portland, Oregon.
The earliest possible introduction of puppies and children to a healthy lifestyle and diet is crucial.

Obie, a five-year-old dachshund, was dubbed the World’s Fattest Sausage Dog because of his weight, which was more than double the average daschund’s 32lbs weight at 77lbs.
He had been taken care of by an elderly couple before being adopted by Nora, who gave him whatever he desired and were unable to exercise because of their poor health.
To prevent unpleasant chaffing caused by his stomach rubbing against the floor, he had to wear a special harness.
“He was definitely adored and his elderly owners just couldn’t say no to those enormous brown eyes,” said Nora, who has a degree in animal science.

“I was overjoyed to be able to assist him in adjusting to his new life.
I now want his story to motivate other large animals and perhaps even their owners to improve their health in the coming year.
Before jogging him on a treadmill and taking him swimming when Nora adopted him, she placed him on a strict diet to lose some of his bellies.
He had to have cosmetic surgery to remove several pounds of extra skin after shedding a whopping 40 pounds.
