The puppies’ caretakers, Harbor Humane Society, posted on social media that the puppies’ survival was made possible by a call from a kind stranger.
According to a Facebook post from Harbor Humane Society, the nonprofit animal sanctuary caring for the puppies, the puppies, who are all about four weeks old, were discovered abandoned in a cardboard box on the side of a road close to Holland, Michigan, on Saturday.
After someone saw the package of abandoned puppies on the road during a storm and called the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Harbor Humane Society eventually acquired the small dogs. The puppies were saved by deputies after they responded to the anonymous call.
According to Harbor Humane Society, the puppies wouldn’t have survived if it weren’t for that call. When the puppies arrived at the animal shelter, they were “soaking wet with low temperatures,” and as of Sunday, two of them were still in critical condition.
The Harbor Humane Society posted a statement on social media saying, “It breaks our hearts that things happened this way. “This perilous issue could have been avoided if they had sought out to Harbor; we would have been more than happy to assist.”
The puppies’ care will be paid for in part by donations, and Harbor Humane Society is requesting that anyone with knowledge about who may have abandoned the animals get in touch if they have any.
Harbor Humane Society also informed its neighborhood in a Facebook post about the discarded puppy rescue that the shelter is there to assist pet parents who are having a hard time caring for their animals.
The shelter also stated that because the dogs are still recovering from their ordeal, the puppies saved from the storm are not yet eligible for adoption.
The Harbor Humane Society reports that there are capacity difficulties at the shelter as more animals are brought in than are being adopted. The group posted on social media at the beginning of this month that they have 207 cats and 45 dogs on the premises as well as 160 cats and 45 dogs in foster care.
