Their white German shepherd, Shadow, began barking obnoxiously as Craig Jones and Marie Jordan were rapidly falling asleep. Craig figured the dog wanted to go outside, so he got up to open the door for it. The man left the room and noticed that it was entirely covered with foul black smoke. It was discovered that a short circuit in the kitchen caused a fire. Without Shadow, the pair would not have been aware.
