Like the other dogs, Luca had trouble understanding how things worked. The environment the 4-year-old rescue came from was aware of beauty, but it was always obscured. He would savor every moment and take it all in if only his eyes would let him.
And because of eye surgery, Luca had recently had that experience. For the first time in his brief life, he was able to see everything clearly, including how much his mother loved him.
After suffering from the impaired vision for years, Luca had cataract surgery in July. The lovely rescue appeared ready to resume a normal life by the third day of recovery.
Luca’s owner, Katie Schneller, told The Dodo, “We went for our usual stroll, but instead of rushing around with his nose to the ground and sniffing everything, he was taking a few steps, stopping, and just glancing around.”
“It was very lovely. He kept turning his head around to look at me and grinning broadly like a puppy.
Mom was Luca’s most dependable companion as he took in every detail of his newly clear surroundings.
According to Schneller, after sitting in the middle of the road and staring up at the trees, he would stroll to the side of the road and stare at the river with his mouth open.
“I honestly thought I understood him to be totally surprised. This dog never stops moving, yet he sat there and observed from time to time.”
Luca was a homeless dog when he was taken up by Animal Care Centers NYC. Every day after work, Schneller paid him a visit and fell in love with him there.
“The rescue workers really tried to prevent me from adopting him because they felt he was too high-energy and overactive, and the blindness would just make things worse,” Schneller remembered. ” I told them that I could handle the job.”
Schneller saw that Luca’s eyesight was deteriorating as he began crashing into objects. One particular incident led to a visit to the emergency department. So, she understood it was the right time for the surgery.

Afterward, the vet advised Schneller that it might take Luca up to seven days to regain his vision.
He appeared to be having a great time in the car, but Schneller noted that he was still very bloated and mostly kept his eyes closed. He slept for the majority of the day and only took short strolls.
Luca, fortunately, experienced the advantages sooner and can now see every day how happy he makes his mother.
The dog was “an incredible dog,” according to Schneller. I’ve had dogs before, but Luca is special. He may be my soul mate, I think. He is the most devoted, wise, and content puppy I have ever met.
